3G mobile networks will be gradually phased out over the following few years. Here’s what this implies for you, the client.
The UK’s mobile services now employ four distinct ‘generations’ of mobile technology: 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G. Calls, messages, and lower-speed data services are delivered over 3G networks, which have been in operation since 2003.

Network providers are switching off their networks at different times
Each Mobile Phone company has its own schedule for switching down its 3G network. These timings may vary, so you should check your mobile provider’s website for the most recent update:
● Vodafone will switch off in early 2023.
● EE expects to implement the switch-off in early 2024.
● Three plan to turn off by the end of 2024.
● O2 has yet to reveal any switch-off plans.
These are the four largest mobile network carriers in the United Kingdom. All other mobile providers use these networks to deliver their services. For instance:
Lebara Mobile, Asda Mobile, and Talk Mobile use Vodafone’s network. Virgin Mobile presently utilises the Vodafone network, but will switch to the O2 network in the future.
● Co-op, Utility Warehouse, Plusnet, and BT Mobile utilise EE.
ID Mobile utilises the Three network, whereas Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, Sky Mobile, and Lycamobile use the O2 network. The 3G switch-off times for these providers will be the same as the network they use.
